Biography

Mr. Freeman joined the Johnson Legal Group, LLC as an associate in February of 2008. While experienced in personal injury and criminal defense litigation, Mr. Freeman’s focus has been in family law. As a child of divorce, Mr. Freeman appreciates the importance of having sound legal advice and competent counsel in domestic proceedings. Mr. Freeman understands the difficult and emotionally demanding times a spouse goes through during divorce, and he recognizes the pain parents go through when their children become the subject of litigation.

Mr. Freeman successfully takes aggressive approaches to litigation with skill and seasoned experience in Court to vigorously advocate for client interests if that is what you seek. Yet, Mr. Freeman believes in fully informing clients of their options and discussing approaches that will allow them to restructure their families in a way that encourages and promotes the best interests of their children. Heavy litigation may be necessary to promote your interests, and Mr. Freeman has historically obtained highly favorable outcomes on behalf of his clients in such cases. Most often, this approach is required when the other party is endangering a child or habitually demonstrating unreasonable behavior and taking irrational positions. However, Mr. Freeman has found that most of his clients are able to achieve and share similar goals that include, 1) a healthy relationship between their children and the other parent, 2) parenting time arrangements that are in their children’s best interest and promote a healthy relationship between parents, and 3) receiving their fair share of the marital estate. More often than not, Mr. Freeman finds these goals are accomplished by zealously advocating in a constructive way and by listening carefully to client needs in order to generate simple solutions to complex legal issues. Mr. Freeman discourages excessive spending on aggressive litigation over trivial matters, such as inexpensive home decor. In his experience, doing this likely results in clients with less money for themselves and their children, and more unnecessary animosity between parents. Mr. Freeman instead believes in empowering clients and creating arrangements which allow them to work together in meeting the basic needs of their children. Mr. Freeman cares about the outcome of his cases and feels honored when he is chosen by those who place there trust and confidence in him to guide them through what can be the most difficult time of their lives.

Mr. Freeman has also completed mediation training through the University of Colorado Law School. He is available to serve as a professional, neutral third party mediator. In this role, Mr. Freeman does not represent one party as an attorney. Rather, he works jointly for both parties to assist them in cooperatively finding solutions. Mediation can save parties tens of thousands of dollars in litigation costs and allow the healing process to begin earlier. People who resolve issues through mediation, instead of through Court at a contested hearing, are less likely to return to Court for future litigation at high financial and emotional cost. As a practicing family law attorney, Mr. Freeman brings a uniquely firm understanding of family law issues beneficial to those who hire him as their mediator.

Mr. Freeman graduated from Wayne State University Law School in 2007, where he focused on litigation and worked in a free legal aid clinic helping low income families in the city of Detroit. Prior to that, he obtained his Bachelors of Arts Degree from Western Michigan University in 2004, where he majored in Political Science, minored in English, and graduated with cum laude honors.
